Welcome to Mallorca: How to Protect Paradise by Mallorca Preservation Foundation

The Mediterranean beauty and rich cultural history make Mallorca a privileged place. As well as being a world-renowned tourist destination, Mallorca is home to an international community seeking to live the Mediterranean dream. However, this Balearic paradise, like many other natural destinations, is facing more and more challenges due to tourism and population growth. Therefore, sustainability becomes imperative, not only to preserve the beauty and biodiversity of the island, but also to ensure an excellent quality of life for its inhabitants and visitors.

Purchasing a property in Mallorca offers the opportunity to enjoy its exceptional environment, but also to be aware of its limitations and actively contribute to its preservation through local initiatives led and supported by Mallorca Preservation Foundation.

The key role of the Mallorca Preservation Foundation

Mallorca Preservation Foundation was created in 2017 with the aim of preserving the island’s environment through projects in different key areas such as marine conservation, ecological agriculture, the promotion of environmental education or sustainable development. Today, they are involved in more than 30 projects to preserve the beauty and high environmental quality of Mallorca.

The origin of this project model lies in the Ibiza Preservation Foundation, co-founded in 2008 by Ben Goldsmith, an environmental philanthropist, who currently sits on the board of the Mallorca Preservation Foundation. These initiatives have been replicated around the world, giving rise to the Conservation Collective. The foundation in Mallorca is made up of a local team and a steering committee, including its Chairman Hans Lenz, Drew Aaron, Founder and CEO of Lionsgate Capital Group of Companies and Francisco Mercadal, Partner and Director of Mercadal Abogados, among other members dedicated to the environment and the protection of Mallorca.

Sustainable tips for residents and property owners in Mallorca

Buying a property in Mallorca indirectly plays a major role in the protection, preservation, and enhancement of this unique environment. Every resident and property owner in Mallorca has the responsibility and privilege to care for this paradise by taking into consideration different aspects, from the way the home is built and maintained, to how it interacts with the natural resources and the community. The resources on an island are limited and therefore every action counts in creating a more sustainable and respectful future for Mallorca. These are some of the key steps that you as a homebuyer or homeowner in Mallorca should consider, ensuring that the island continues to be a thriving and healthy place to live.

Green Building and Refurbishment: When building or refurbishing your residence in Mallorca, it is essential to keep the following points in mind:

  • Consider environmentally friendly building practices.
  • Select sustainable materials.
  • Opt for techniques that minimise environmental impact.
  • Research and collaborate with local companies that specialise in ecological construction, offering solutions such as high-performance technical insulation, solar energy systems or the use of recycled or ecological materials.

Water Efficiency: Water is an essential and limited resource both in Mallorca and in the rest of the Balearic Islands. When designing your garden, opt for native plants that require less watering and are adapted to Mallorca’s climate. Implement systems to collect and reuse rainwater, an ecological and economical practice. In addition, install water-saving devices in your home, such as low-flow taps and efficient irrigation systems, which will contribute significantly to water conservation on the island.

Energy optimisation: Maximise energy efficiency in your home by making the most of Mallorca’s natural light. Use energy-efficient light bulbs and consider installing smart thermostats to better manage energy use. In addition, investing in renewable energy, such as solar panels, not only reduces your carbon footprint, but also offers long-term financial benefits.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Incorporate the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle into your daily routine. Avoid the use of single-use plastics and be proactive in separating waste when recycling. Opt for local, organic and seasonal products, helping to reduce your environmental impact and supporting the local economy. The Mallorca Preservation Foundation recommends visiting the different markets around the island where you can buy directly from local producers. These small changes in your daily habits can make a big difference to the environment.

A commitment to the preservation of Mallorca

All these sustainable tips add up if complemented by actively participating in local conservation and sustainability initiatives. Initiatives can be as simple as a group beach and/or forest clean-up, a perfect family activity, which motivates the youngest members of the family because they see immediate results. These collective actions strengthen the community and ensure a more sustainable future for the island.

Over the years, Lionsgate Capital and the other companies in the group have a strong commitment to the Mallorca Preservation Foundation. By supporting organisations such as the Mallorca Preservation Foundation, a positive impact on the island is made through sustainability and environmental protection.

Welcome to your home in Mallorca, a place where together we can create a sustainable future for the island!
